Lampadomancy is a form of divination involving divinating into the flame of a lamp, candle or open fires. It is said that the gypsies would often see into the flame and foretell the events which would take place in the future. This can also be labelled scrying into the naked flame.

I live in Scotland and, very often over the winter period, we keep candles handy for the stormy weather as we all know it may lead to power cuts and no electricity. So this is the season when I personally do lampadomancy. Well, what else can you do when there is no power?

I remember, when I was a child, we grew up with coal fires and I would stare for hours, looking at the flames and trying to figure out what I could see in them. I heard my gran once tell my mum, after looking in the fire, that she would have a knock on the door by someone giving her back money. My mum laughed at the time but, sure enough, the insurance man later came to refund over-paid money. This amazed me and I had to question my gran on how she had seen that.

What I did not tell you was that she had watched a lump of coal fall, which means “someone official". Gran told me that the fact that my mum had ran and picked up the coal and placed it back in the fire, meant she was going to receive. As my mum placed the coal back into the fire, Gran had seen money coming from the high flames. So she had seen that the man was coming to give her money.

Here is a simple guideline to practise Lampadomancy on candles:

For good fortune the flame would have a single point.

However, two points maybe a sign of bad luck.

A flame that is bent may indicate illness, and sparks indicate news.

Sudden extinction of a flame is considered to be a very bad omen.

A larger, single, bright flame indicates exceptionally good fortune and majority of people carry on this legacy through blowing out candles on a birthday cake in the hope that their wish will come true.

Practising scrying into a flame, you will see pictures form and this will give you a more detailed divination.
